FIEA selects students based on above-average grades, Chinese proficiency, emotional maturity, and a desire to share their culture while learning about another culture. During their stay in China, students learn about various aspects of Chinese culture, society, and customs while living with Chinese host families and attending high school. In addition to participating in an orientation in their home country, students participate in a two-day orientation in China upon arrival in China to prepare them for the cultural differences and challenges that they will face as exchange students. Through the students’ daily activities and interactions they not only learn about China, but also have a chance to share the ideas, customs, and culture from their home countries with their Chinese host families, classmates, teachers, and communities.

FIEA has a network of local representatives throughout China, who provide support on a local level. They carefully screen and interview volunteer host families in their homes prior to students’ arrivals to ensure that each student and host family will have a pleasant and memorable experience. Host families, students, and the students’ schools receive support, supervision, and counseling from the FIEA national office and, on a local level, from their local representative throughout the duration of the program. Local representatives submit monthly progress reports to the FIEA national office to help track the student’s progress. Cost to participants for an academic year is approximately $6,500 to $8,500. Cost to participants for an academic semester is approximately $4,000 to $5,500. Supervision, counseling, and insurance are included. Airfare and personal expenses are excluded.
